Established in 1848, BSCES is the oldest engineering society in the United States and currently supports over 2,800 members throughout Massachusetts. BSCES formally became a Section of ASCE in 1974 after the merger with ASCE's Massachusetts Section. Ten years later, BSCES was instrumental in the formation of The Engineering Center, already a focal point for our professions throughout New England.

Professional Development has been the major focus of BSCES over the past century and a half. Ten technical groups, 15+ committees, a semi-annual Journal, regular technical programs and lecture series provide unique opportunities for civil engineers to interact with their peers.

• Younger Members are engineers under the age of 35 committed to the professional development of BSCES young members. Activities include a fall field trip, winter dinner meeting and spring Red Sox outing. The group's primary charge is to educate students of all levels through classroom visits and presentations about career opportunities in civil engineering.

• Fifteen plus active committees provide the administrative and professional balance to BSCES. Committees include: Student Affairs, Public Awareness and Outreach, Continuing Education, Government Affairs and more.

• Our monthly newsletter lists upcoming meetings, job advertisements, seminars and other topics essential to civil engineering practice.

• Ten Technical Groups, the heartbeat of BSCES, generate the society's programs and opportunities for professional development of civil engineers. The Groups conduct more than 50 regular technical meetings and four to six lecture series annually. Some 75 BSCES members are involved directly with the planning of these programs through the ten specialty Technical Groups, which are: Construction, Engineering Management, Environmental, Geo-Institute, Hydraulics and Water Resources, Infrastructure, Structural, Transportation, Waterways, and Younger Members Group.

• Lecture Series keep professionals abreast of the latest developments with timely topics and well-known speakers. Published proceedings include Structural Details in Steel and Concrete Buildings, Rehabilitation of Waterfront Structures, and Design, Construction and Performance of Deep Excavations in Urban Areas. These proceedings and more are available for sale at The Engineering Center.

Our world-renowned Civil Engineering Practice Journal seeks to capture the spirit and substance of contemporary civil engineering through articles that emphasize techniques now being applied successfully in civil engineering works. Published twice a year, the Journal is complimentary to all members.
