Amy B. Smith is the founder of the MIT D-Lab and a leader in the field of Appropriate Technology, creating inventions that directly improve lives in developing nations. This Lexington native and MIT graduate has dedicated herself to fighting poverty through innovative engineering and shows results through actions, both actively inventing and teaching others to do the same, while breaking down barriers of technological literacy and debunking stereotypes associated with the field of engineering. Ms. Smith has won numerous awards including the 2008 Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Leadership Award, the 1988 JFK Peace Corps Volunteer of the Year Award, and the 2000 MIT-Lemelson Student Prize for Invention. She instructs at the MIT Edgerton Center, and through her D-Lab, in which her students travel overseas and work directly with communities, she teaches students the value of "keeping it simple" and inspires countless people through her global vision.
