Construction Career Challenge Awards

 

Background
The Massachusetts Construction Career Days Competition is an integral part of the annual MassCCD Event held at the New England Laborer’s Training Academy.  The MassCCD Competition is open to all High School students participating in the MassCCD Event.  The Competition is comprised of three (3) “Challenge” events related to construction careers, which are described below.  The winning school for each Challenge event receives a cash award and framed certificate provided by the MassCCD Steering Committee. 


The awards are named in honor of Mr. James Merloni, Jr., in recognition of the gracious support for the MassCCD program provided by Mr. Merloni and the New England Laborers Training Academy (NELTA) in Hopkinton, MA.  The names of the winning schools are engraved on a plaque displayed in the Merloni building at NELTA.

Engineering and Technology Challenge
The Engineering and Technology Challenge is comprised of six (6) engineering-related activities at the MassCCD Event.  The activities are all located at the “Upper Area” inside the Merloni building training bay.  The school accumulating the highest number of points across the six activities is the Challenge winner.  The winning school will receive a cash award in the amount of $500 and a framed certificate.  The award money is stipulated by the MassCCD Steering Committee to be used by the school for classroom equipment, supplies, field trips and/or scholarships for students pursuing a career in engineering and technology.

Construction Operations Skills Challenge
The Construction Operations Skills Challenge is comprised of one construction field activity at the MassCCD Event.  The activity is located at the “Lower Area” on the NELTA site.  The school accumulating the highest number of points from this activity is the Challenge winner.  The winning school will receive a cash award in the amount of $500 and a framed certificate.  The award money is stipulated by the MassCCD Steering Committee to be used by the school for classroom supplies, tools, field trips, and/or scholarships for students pursuing a career in the construction industry.

Signature Project Challenge
The Signature Project Challenge is comprised of one signature project with specifications given to schools and students prior to attending the Construction Career Days Event.  Schools are required to bring their completed project to the MassCCD Event where they will be exhibited and judged. The projects are displayed at the “Upper Area” inside the Merloni building training bay.  The winning school will receive a cash award in the amount of $500 and a framed certificate.  The award money is stipulated by the MassCCD Steering Committee to be used by the school for classroom equipment, supplies, field trips and /or scholarships for students pursuing a career in engineering or the construction industry.
