Massachusetts Teens Compete With Model Bridges

WHAT:
Eleventh Annual BSCES Model Bridge Competition for high school students sponsored by the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section/ASCE (BSCES) in association with the Massachusetts Pre-Engineering Program Inc. Over 150 students are expected to compete.
WHERE:
Northeastern University, Curry Student Center, 346 Huntington Ave, Boston
WHEN:
Saturday, February 5, 2005 8:30 AM – 1:30 PM (9:30 AM–12:00 PM–best viewing time)
WHO and WHY:
Members of the Infrastructure Group of the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section/ASCE worked with over 150 eastern Massachusetts high school and middle school students, comprising 55 teams from 17 schools to build bridges out of manila file folders, fishing wire and glue. This competition promotes teamwork and community participation among local school students along with the civil engineering profession.
Teams are from: Arlington High School, Boston Latin Academy, Boston Latin School, Brighton High School, Cambridge Rindge & Latin, Cranston High School West, English High School, Fenway High School, Higgins Middle School, John D. O'Bryant, Lincoln-Sudbury Reg High School, Malden Catholic High, Marshfield High School, Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School, Norwell High School, Pembroke High School, Sharon Middle School. Some schools have several teams.

The model bridge competition is part of National Engineers Week-Boston, but will be held prior to the week. Winners will be announced at the end of the competition. BSCES’s Infrastructure Group organizes the competition.
Last year’s winning bridge, built by students at Boston Latin School, supported 180 pounds, including the loading apparatus. Last year’s winning bridge for aesthetic design was built by students from Boston’s John D. O’Bryant School. Established in 1848, the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section/American Society of Civil Engineers is the oldest professional engineering association in the country. The society offers events, continuing education and networking opportunities to its 3000 members. BSCES seeks to promote the civil engineering profession through increased interaction with the public and students of all ages.

Getting to Northeastern
From the north (via Route I-93 or Route 1)
Take the Storrow Drive exit, and proceed to the Fenway exit. Follow signs for Boylston Street inbound, and bear right onto Westland Avenue. Turn right onto Massachusetts Avenue, proceed to the third traffic light, and turn right onto Columbus Avenue. The Renaissance Parking Garage is at 835 Columbus Ave. Curry Center is on opposite side of Ruggles Station and off to the right.
From the west (via Route 90, Massachusetts Turnpike)
Take Exit 22 (Copley Square), and bear right. Proceed to the first traffic light, and turn right onto Dartmouth Street. Take the next right onto Columbus Avenue. The Renaissance Parking Garage is at 835 Columbus Ave. Curry Center is on opposite side of Ruggles Station and off to the right. .
From the west (via Route 9)
Proceed east on Route 9; it will become Huntington Avenue. Turn right onto Ruggles Street. At the fourth traffic light, turn left onto Tremont Street. At the second set of lights, turn left onto Melnea Cass Boulevard, and then turn left onto Columbus Avenue. The Renaissance Parking Garage is at 835 Columbus Ave. Curry Center is on opposite side of Ruggles Station and off to the right. See campus map.
